Uttam Pallavi,

Great suggestion. I would gladly point out that Rajasri is blessed with Swami's seva for the past few years and is constantly under his guidance and training. She is asking the question because she doesnt want to make any mistakes in swamy's seva. She, I guess, has read the books, but is asking for a "practical" and "applicable" way of thinking to constantly remember what she read in the books and not to let mind loose. Suggestions regarding your methods that you try so that you constantly keep "presense of mind" and remember that you are doign seva would be helpful.. so please add your opinions on this.

Rajasri - Great question. I think I talked about this when we met. Remember two things. One, mind gets distracted when it starts doign anything mechanical. So, dont do things mechanically. Do them with presense of mind. That is, when ever you do anything, you should first think it consciously, visualize it and then do it. That way, things remain fresh longer and you will not forget that you are doign seva.

Next, to keep "Bhavam" constantly, ultimately its all about "knowing" rather than "remembering". We always remember that fire burns. Why? because we know it burns. Similarly, we should know that Saints are great and why they are great and what we should do with them. If we try just to remember it rather than understand and know it, it wont work. So, until we get such strong experience and discipline, we keep failing. But the only way is to keep going and keep trying again and again. I suggest you to think of who you were before you got Seva and how fortunate you are. Think about this deeply. If you really respect the opportunity, you will not fail. So, understand how lucky and blessed you are and everymoment try to fulfill it. Every few minutes, think of how much you want to utilize every moment of the opportunity. Because, once our past punya runs out, we loose the opportunity of seva. So remembering this will help in keeping "Bhavam" in place until we get the true "understanding".

Hope it answers your query. Any more doubts, do discuss.

Jai Sai Master!

Sai Bandhus & Babu garu!!

This particular answer that you gave to Ms Rajasri is so inspiring. It gave me a direct answer to a couple of points, that I have been searching for, but which I cannot share with everybody.

Babu garu, can you please eloborate on the following?

Quote:

Remember two things. One, mind gets distracted when it starts doign anything mechanical. So, dont do things mechanically. Do them with presense of mind. That is, when ever you do anything, you should first think it consciously, visualize it and then do it. That way, things remain fresh longer and you will not forget that you are doign seva.

How do I develop the presense of mind? I know I asked largely a common question, and a broad-topic question. What I mean to say is, you said, until we get a great experience or we have strong discipline, we keep failing. So, if we were to go back a step and see how we can get that discipline, then we can go forward without any difficulties.

So, please do help me understand this in a more specific way.

Regards,
Ananth

Jai Sai Master,
Namaste
For more than twenty years i had been doing parayana. It was mostly mechanical without appropriate bhavam. Absent mind, lazy, sleepynature, intent to finish today's portion some how or other & fear of discontinuity were the main characterstics.
Even while reading stotras, these malinyams continue.
Your posting has opened my eyes.
Love & Only Love shall be the main attitude during Seva.
Can u tell how to enhance this positive attitude?
We are all so lucky that this forum is serving a genuine cause of Satsangam for those who are physically away from the Divine Mother & Sai Bandhus.
Thanks

jai sai master sai bandhus.

a very interesting question has been put forward by ananth garu----- how to keep up the 'presence of mind' while we are trying to do seva.

there are certain truths , which if conciously recognised will help us in this respect------

1. life span is running out and so time is too scarce and too precious to be under/un/misutilized.

2. if not utilized properly, our rinanubandha with sadguru will diminish day by day which is going to be impossible for many more janmas to come. and rinanubandha with sadguru's mortal body is even more precious if we decide to utilize it properly.

3.we should try to recognise the value of the punya and the desire of past janmas that is responsible for such a runanubandha with a sadguru and our efforts should be towards ensuring such a runanubandha for the janmas to come. that should be a part of everyday prayer.

4.manava janma is very rare and precious amongst all other janmas and it is the only chance to achieve the ultimate goal of life.we are all equipped with all the faculties that are needed to acieve it. once wasted it is almost impossible to attain it again. and 'satguru seva' is still more rare and precious.

5.while doing seva, we should remember how elited we felt when we received the opportunity for the first time. and try to do each part of seva with the same reverence and attitude towards the guru. we should doit as if we are doing it for the first time (with such a shraddha and gratitude).

6.we should try to remember again and again how capable a sadguru is.
he can do anything. writing a dairy about his presence and leelas and reading it frequently helps a lot.

7.we should try to search within ourselves for negative attitudes and behaviours like laziness, postponement and egotism, which distract us from doing seva in its true sense and abhor them.

8.we should try to understand the god's grace (apaara karuna) and be thankful for giving us the precious opportunity.

if we read, think and remember these points everyday when we wake up and go to sleep(mananam and aatmavimarsa) and then rethink about the day we spent in these lines and then decide upon how we should spend the next day and try to put into action then we can achieve strong 'viveka' and 'presence of mind'.

if there are any points to discuss or if you find any faults in the above discussion i pray the saimaster in u to correct me and help improve my viveka.

jai sai master.

Jai Sai Master!

Very very well said!

If we can keep those points in mind, it is very very unlikely that we loose interest in seva.

But again, our human nature drives us nuts. We keep forgetting whats important and only remember whats pleasurable for us. This is the greatest pitfall. So, obviously, this mechanism has to be overridden to keep us on the right path. How can we do this?

The classical explaination for this and the answer for this is to have NIYAMA. That is to have a routine of things that we do that get us in line and keep us there. For example, it is very good to repeat in our minds how sinful we are and remind ourselves as to where we will end up soon without the kripa of a Sadguru. It is also important to have a prayer routine daily that reminds us of this. The few BIGGEST THINGS that help us achieve this are :

1. Udaya Prarthana by Master (In Sai Natha Puja)
2. Meaningful recitation of Shiridi Aaratis.
3. A good word for "Sadguru" that reminds us of our attitude.
4. Rememberance that we are human and that we are prone to wrong judgement and so, to wrong action, which is an absolute no no infront of a Guru. Atleast, a mistake shouldnt be done either deliberately or by "absense of mind".
5. And last but not least, a daily dose of Sai Baba and Master and other saints's teachings.

Initially, it is very important to bombard ourselves with teachings of Saints. Since we are used to the teachings of the world since childhood, we keep slipping back into a worldly mode automatically. So, we should first get us off the hook, so to say, by bombarding ourselves night and day with Master's teachings and sayings of other saints.

Here, mind starts playing its tricks. It says that we cant act well in our duties if we are always bound by Master's teachings. For example, it will say "How can you go and do a job and at the same time listen to Master's teachings? It is impossible. You cant concentrate on your job!"

This is the first hurdle to many. The other one is that "I will listen to all that after I come from work". But this can be overcome easily by making a routine and being stern. But the other one is much stronger.

Here we should really recap the situation.

Who are we?
What do we want?
Who gave us the job?
Who gives us everything in daily life?
Who knows best? we or Baba?
Who will we choose? Baba or our job?
Who is more important to keep in touch with? Baba or job?
Arnt we working happily even while listening to music? why cant we do it with Master's words?

This is how we should keep thinking. By doing so, atleast for a couple of years, we should keep our priorities straight. We should immerse ourselves in Baba most of the time. Just bombard yourself! Thats it! Keep Master's speeches on in the car instead of music. If its distracting, stop it and start singing bhajan to urself. Once you get into your house play devotional CDs that you understand the meaning of. No point in listening to old telugu songs if you cant understand the language. Listen to stuff that you understand. Listen to speeches. Once you listen them enough times, what happens is that it stops being a bother and disturbance and you get used to saying Master's dialogues along with Him while the speech is playing, while at the same time, cook your breakfast, take bath and so on.

The mind says its tired. Say that it is better to be tired than to forget about Master. Better dead than fallen. Like this, unrelentingly, one should bombard oneself with teachings. Once this becomes a habbit, you would realize that you dont stray away at all. You would remember Master's and Baba's teachings as those of your pocket wallet. You would know how to think and behave in life, just as you would know how many paise make a rupee.

This is when mind becomes cocky. It says that it doesnt need the speeches any more. This is when you can reduce the bombardment from outside and start getting used to bombarding it from the inside. That is, what ever you are doing, your mind should go on to Baba. When ever you find that its strayed off, time to bombard it again from outside. There comes a day when you wouldnt do anything without thinking of Baba. That is, you are walking, you look at your hands accidentally, you would find that your hands are doing little beats for the bhajans that your mind is playing inside.

Once this stage is reached (should take about a year atleast to get here) you can say that you are probably 20 percent safe from bad activities.

After this comes the fierce test of sustaining this mode. Here one should remember that each minute lost is a minute lost. And one shouldnt relax even slightly. As Master used to say, "Clinch your teeth and get on with Sadhana, how ever hard it gets. Get it done. Thats the only way.."

He also says in other places in Prabodhamritam and other books. Its like trying to light a damp match stick. It will not ignite quickly, but if you say that it isnt happening and you throw it away, it gets more damp and it again takes more time to get it lit. The key is to keep it near the fire until its dampness is gone and it lights. Keep it there until it happens. The more you delay, the more you delay.

This is the way to keep oneself in "Master consciousness" all the time. This is the way for discipline. The ONLY WAY for discipline. If you dont bombard yourself, but just exert yourself, you would get tired and bored and you will fall back into anarchy. The helping pole here is Master's teachings, whether through books, speeches or bhajans. The only way is to keep Him in mind and keep in mind that He is the only one worthy of that place in mind. Keeping in mind that theres no other way other than Him to save us through out our lives from our own bad karmas that we did or those we are going to do. The more we remember this, the more the mind stays. The less we keep it in mind, the more complacent and fickle we become. We would start thinking that its our life and our way and that we cant do more than what we are doing towards Master. The only way out of this is just bombarding oneself with Master. Do satsangs, keep saying quotes from Master's books to each others, keep listening to speeches.

If it starts to feel boring, its a great idea to contest ourselves. Like say, I want to byheart this speech in a week. Or something like that.

Keep uttering Master's name. Keep uttering it with reverance. The word you should use for Master should be the word that inspires me most.

Regular reading of Milarepa charitra is invaluable. As is the reading of Edinijam and Matam enduku. Similarly, an occassional, but regular reading of Guru Siddharudha Swamy charitra is also invaluable. Ofcourse, the king of Invaluable readings is "Prabothamritam" and "Sai Baba and His teachings". I say one should read them repeatedly, that is keep reading until one of them is finished, then start another, then when that is over start the former. Like that keep a cycle of those books going.

THIS IS THE ONLY WAY TO STAY MOTIVATED.

Yeah, motivation is the factor. Really analyze your motivations and motives of reaching Master. repeat the need for a Master to yourself.

Obviously, this all means less social life. Which is a good thing. One should avoid all company that makes one forget Master, even for an instant. Ofcourse, we have jobs that Baba gave us that we should do to keep our families fed. I am talking abuot the others. The ones that we have for recreation. I have seen far too many people falling into pits where they say "I have to go to movies with coleagues and I have to keep chatting with them. Otherwise we cant maintain a working environment and we cant stay friends.." Well, thats another trick too. Here one should remember that every one loves a good person more than a person who is plain funny and time passing. The only difference is that every one loves to waste their time and the time of the time passer kind of a guy, where as they all love the good person who keeps quite or talks only good but is not fun to be around with and so they leave him alone when he stays alone, but will welcome him into conversations whenever he wants to.

Really think this out and you will be out of that pitfall.

THe final hurdle in this is "I have already developed a lifestyle. I should keep my obligations going. Otherwise my friends will think that something is wrong. It has been such that since college me and my friends go to a hotel every weekend and spend time and now if I say I cant come, bridges will be burnt between us". Another mind's trick.

Here the way is to remember how many times we escaped our friends when we thought we had better things to do. Here one should remember that it doesnt take much to say no to a friend if he really is one. All that needs to be done is that the friend needs to be told that you think you should spend your week ends meditating rather than merrymaking and that you would only be merry making when theres time for it during extra holidays or something. They will try to pull you off your determination a couple of times and if you are strong, they will oblige. No bridges will be burnt at all. All they would think is that you have changed. Other than that, nothing changes.

Well, if I keep writing, I can keep writing on this stuff, cuz this is the stuff thats been going in my mind for a few years now.

So, I think you all get the idea. Once again, Veda put it succinctly. Keep those points in mind, re-analyze your motives and motivations towards Guru again and again, keep bombarding yourself with His teachings and you will be fine.

What ever I wrote above is said in the first few minutes of Master's speech on Vartaalaapam available here :

http://www.divyajanani.org/saimaster/SAI_MASTER_AUDIO/SMS106_Vaarthaalapam.mp3

"Without learning to control the five sense organs and the five action organs, we cant move towards realization."

The only way to tame them is to train them. First sternly and once they soften up, keep them there. The only way I know of is bombardment.
Hehe, funny, the usage of WAR terminology like "bombardment" in spirituality. When understood well, even Tsun Tzu's "ART OF WAR" can teach a lot about spiritual practise.

Jai Sai Master!!

Infinite thanks to Sri Babu garu & Veda garu!!

great points!! Now it is up to me to go through those points, and also the vast points specified by Sri Master garu. At this time, I remember that saying by Sri Master in Leelamrutam,

"We should cultviate the Garden of Roses, remove the weeds, and be vigilant, to take care that those weeds to not re-grow."

As you said Babu garu, human mind drives the humans nuts!! And I am te perfect specimen. But Baba is / has / and always been so kind to us (to me). He still waits for me to set myself right and take the path of Sri Master's teachings. And I will try to follow that to the best of my ability.

Thank you again Babu garu & Veda garu for those invaluable points.

About a week before i wrote about interference of Malinyams during Parayana & Stotra Patham.
I am experiencing a great shift in my attitude since then.
More & more love & saburi are replacing earlier Tamasik bhavanas.
i am grateful to this forum for enhancing correct attitude.

i remember a verse from Gita.

Api set suduracharo bhajate maam ananya bhak !

"Even a person with bad habits, when he prays consistently with ananya bhavana, is counted as a sadhak, because of his established practice."
