Jai Sai Master!

Intellegent! Giving 5 reasons for happiness and the same five reasons not working as for the opposite huh! clever.. hehe.

Lemme give my own reasons for the opposite of happiness then.

Right.

See, when you say you are happy for getting presents or playing, think about it, what is happening?

Lets say you got a present. Its your fav toy. If you remember, there is excitement about the toy first. Then you think of how and what you can do with it, you explore it and then imagine the ways in which you can play with it. Now in those things, where does happiness come? While excitement? While exploring? Or during all three? Suppose, you get hurt meanwhile. Does that happiness stay? or does it go? It goes. Why? The toy is still there, all the things you can do with it, you can still do, but for a moment, you loose that happiness right?

Another example. Lets take a simpler one. You heard a good joke. You laugh. You feel happy and you laugh! But when you are laughing, someone comes in and tells you a serious thing, or asks you a serious question. Immediately you stop laughing. Right? Why?

There is a crucial difference between other emotions and happiness. Happiness comes because of certain emotions! Its not an emotion! Rather, its a feeling, an experience. You feel happy when you 'forget' the world around you.

Let me explain. We want something. That want is fulfilled, we get happy. Want is like an obstruction. You are aware that you DONT have that thing. This awareness that you DONT have it is not giving you happiness. When that obstruction is taken away, you feel happy. Same thing with sleep. In deep sleep, you dont even remember where you are sleeping! you are not aware of your surroundings, your body, nor time. Thats when you dont have any obstruction and thats when you feel happy.
But when some one tells you a serious thing as in the previous example, another obstruction comes forth and that stops you from experiencing happiness.

So, happiness is not an emotion. It plays along with emotions. Fulfilling emotions. Emotions that arise because of freedom and fulfillment. Happiness comes the more you are free from obstructions. For example, look at the players. When they make a goal or something, they forget their surroundings and jump and shout like madmen. They dont even think how they are behaving! That means, they dont have any obstructions!! That lack of obstructions is happiness.

What do you say?

Jai Sai Master!!

During all 3 happiness comes.

So Uncle are you saying that even though we get happiness it lasts for only for a little bit of time ??

For example :If I get a puppy I would be very happy, then when I was taking it into the backyard, if my toe hits a rock I just leave the puppy there and go inside to get a bandage after sometime it started raining, I went to my backyard to watch the rain falling then I remember that my puppy was still outside then I get it out of the rain and all of a sudden I feel happy again.Uncle I first got my happiness and lost it then I get it again.

Because we lose that happiness due to the obstruction of the serious question.

We get obstruction because of wishing wishes, so to stop getting obstruction to happiness, we should stop wishing wishes, right ??  But Uncle except Mahatmas, can we live without wishing wishes ?? Is it possible with practice ??

The more freedom we have the more happier we are. So that means wishing is creating an obstruction to our freedom.
So Uncle, wanting to do something and wishing are different. Right ??

For example I want to draw a picture today that is not a wish but I just want to do it. Is that also obstruct our happiness ??

For example If somebody wants to become a teacher, everyday they say to God Please make me a teacher. But then they learn that wishing is bad CAN they say to God that they want to become a teacher ?? Does that count as a wish too ?? In the same  example imagine he became a computer engineer It's better than a teacher but ambition wise his wish is not fulfiled, will he be happy for getting a better job and remembered Baba's words 1) Be happy with what you have, 2) I'll always do things for your good. OR will he be unhappy for not becoming a teacher ??

Scientific Questions Regarding Eclipse
« Reply #38 on: July 22, 2009, 11:05:09 AM »
I know that an Eclipse is when the Sun, Moon, and Earth are lined up in a straight line.

But why is it important in Spirituality??

Why do they say that God loses his powers during an Eclipse?? Is that statement true??

In India they close Temples' doors during an Eclipse and after the Eclipse they clean the Temple. In spirituality we believe that God is filled everywhere, in every tiny bit of space, then what is the point of closing the Temples' doors during Eclipse?? What is the point of building Temples when we are supposed to think that God is everywhere?? Some people misunderstand this and think that God is only in Temples.

I was watching a movie and in it, they say that God loses his powers during an Eclipse, is that true?? I know that 99.99 % of facts in movies aren't accurate :).

Is taking a bath after an Eclipse compulsory or optional??

There is a story that Raahoo and Kethu swallow the Sun or Moon. But after we got better technology we understood the Science part. Now it's a little hard to believe that Raahoo and Kethu were the ones that make the Sun or Moon disappear. Humankind has even set foot on the Moon. I think that Raahoo and Kethu story is a myth. Sorry if I offended anybody.

Why did our Elders tell us not to look at an Eclipse?? There are Eclipse Chasers that get paid and travel around the world to look at and take pictures of Eclipses. Maybe our Elders told us not to look at an Eclipse because an Eclipse releases a kind of radiation that can damage the Eyes. Eclipse Chasers have special equipment to protect their eyes, we don't.

They say that during an Eclipse all food gets poisoned. But if we sprinkle a kind of Grass (I think Darba) the food won't get poisoned. Is that true??

Can anyone clear my doubts??

P.S. NASA is planning to build a space shuttle port and community on the Moon. After that they will use the Moon as a launch pad and orbit Mars, they might possibly land on Mars.

Jai Sai Master!!

Eclipses give a huge potential boost to our minds (Manassu). They give us sharp intellect and clarity. (Those times, i mean). So, they are important in spirituality.

No one says God looses all His powers. Its just that during eclipses, God's powers are not just in idols, but in each person. That is the best time for introspection. And so, it is said that the power of God can be experienced easily in one's own heart. And so, temples are closed during eclipses so that people can try and see God with-in themselves.

Taking bath before and after is also very deeply significant. Unlike the simplistic view of the west about 'bath', for indians, traditionally, bath is the purification of body, mind and soul. So, to purge oneself of any impurities (both physical and mental), and become conducive for introspection, people take bath before an eclipse.
In our tradition, water is closely related to God and Mind (Apas in sanskrit). After the eclipse, water is considered as Teertham (holy water) and bath is performed so as to strengthen and preserve the effects of spiritual practice during eclipse.

Raahu and Ketu are clearly mentioned as 'non-planets' and 'shadow-planets' in Jyotisha. There is no problem there scientifically. Also, sun is symbolic of our external image and moon our internal image. In the story of raahu and ketu, sun and moon are depicted as Devatas to whome Lord Vishnu is giving Immortality. Raahu and Ketu are the shadows (our own false-identity and nonsense) that cover up the true glory of Amruta (Divine Nectar, ambrosia, God-likeness) in us. So, lord Vishnu cuts them down. (like Baba cuts our falseness with His teachings and leelas..) But as always, they return to haunt us after we finish parayana which is symbolic of the recurring eclipses. It is symbolic. One needs a deep study of scriptures at the feet of an accomplished Master to understand those things completely. Only fools can dismiss such wonderfull teachings as simply 'legends' or 'myths' before studying them properly. They are as much fools as some one who says 'an elephant is nothing but a dog' without ever seeing an elephant! Dont ever ever ever fall into such traps Srusti.. Leave that to fools. :)

Just like many super-awesome things that turn into superstition, the food and darbha thing have also become that. In our polluted age, much of it doesnt matter materialistically. But spiritually, Darbha is called 'Kusha' which means 'keen intellect'. By purifying what we eat and drink after an eclipse (keep in mind, we have purified ourselves during the eclipse by becoming introverted) with a keen intellect (understanding), it stops to defile us both physically and mentally. That is, with keen understanding that the food and drink are nothing but Prasaadam and Teertham, we purify them before taking them in, rather than take them in with opinions of like and dislike and taste and all that. That is the reason behind that custom. Darbha - literally can mean - in sanskrit, induction (opposite of deduction).. that is inculcating the good qualities we have accumilated by spiritual practice.

Physically (materially speaking), storage of food is prohibited by our Sages, unless for a good reason. It is to remember that good reason for storage (not just for purely selfish reasons or laziness) the significance of darbha is present.

Hope this answers some of your questions.

Jai Sai Master!!

P.S. Leave the mars landings and escapes to moon to our wonderful scientists at NASA. Most of them are just like most of us, who are still suffering with pleasures and pains, and even after building community on moon, they will still suffer with the disease of ignorance. Rather, along with all those good things that they do, and supporting those, if they are useful (i hardly see a real use for it to humanity as of now.. more poor people need more money to even live. how can one spend such huge budgets on crazy gadgets when people around are dying of hunger and disease??), one should build the sense of true community in the moon with in us (manassu, mind and heart are represented by moon in jyotisha) and use it to land on mars with in us (intellect).

Jai Sai MAster!

Babu garu,

I might be asking a dumb question but still let me go ahead.
Just like eclipse is considered auspicious for spiritual advancement, then Amaavasya and Pournami can
also be considered the same way.

Jai Sai Master!

Absolutely. Master Himself points it out in Pariprasna (If I remember correctly) and in Dhyana Yoga Sarvaswam. Also, it is mentioned in our scriptures that those days are auspicious, Poornima being very auspicious to people who follow the 'orthodox' and amavasya to those who follow the 'vaama marga' (literally, the left way, meaning Tantra, etc.)

Allegorically it is said that the moon reflects the sun completely on the poornima (meaning mind is capable of full grasp and reflection of God's glory) and that the moon hides everything from us on amavasya (meaning that the mind can completely block out unwanted distractions so that pure existence can be experienced).

Swarup uncle and all uncles,

What is the difference between atom and cell???  Because both are described as building blocks.

Both living and non living has matter in it..which means that they have atoms. But cells are only in living things..like plants and animals. But people don't say "I have atoms in me!" They say "I have cells in me!" Why?? Atoms have protons, electrons, and neutrons...They have charges, protons have + charge, electrons have - charge, and neutrons have neutral charge where energy is produced...But cells have nucleus, membrane, and cell organelles. Cells parts don't have charges, but they have energy. That's what I know so far..... I need clarity in this topic.

I have few more questions to ask.......  I have have homework tonight... So I'll go 1 by 1.........
"We should not bother about a wish that Baba did not fulfill because we should believe that he did it for our own good. We need strong faith in Baba to believe that he does things for our own good."

Dear Srusti,

Hope you are not in immediate rush (like you need this info for your homework)..... I will give a detailed answer pretty soon (like this week end, hope you dont mind), but in the mean time think that building block refers in a different way individually with atoms and cells... Think what are atoms building and what are cells building....
and BTW, cells are also essentially made up of atoms, and certain cell organelles do have charge....you know that right?
