Scientific Questions?????????
« on: July 24, 2008, 06:49:10 PM »
Swarup Uncle,

Uncle, I knew that you are going to say YES to my question. :D

Is there a way to find out how old is the earth?

Do birds see the Earth as a fire ball at night?? I remember that I once heard scientists know that birds at night see the earth as a fire ball. Is that true. If it was did the scientists change into a bird? Or Did they find a talking bird to explain it.

When clocks were invented how did the people know that 2 'o' clock in the afternoon is really 2 o clock??

How did monkeys change into humans??

Uncle I know that some of these questions will get answered when I go into higher grades, but I want to know now. :)

I will ask some more questions soon.

Good thinking srusti!!!

One way of increasing the horizon of thinking is searching  :) that will help you to Chanelize your questions further and stream line to new thinking...

So try to find out the answers yourself and than lets start discussing  ;)

With google and other search engines, more so with discovery channel, its not that difficult now a days, rite?! sometimes my nephew makes me think he is much more knowledgable than me.... thanks to discovery channel.

Just one more thing, regardless of what others say keep-up your inquisitive thinking..... and dont stop ur self with superficial answers..... like say, you will find out technique for determining the age of earth, than why was that technique developed to begin with, did it help others in any other way, what new ways could it be used.....

Well when I was a kid of your age, I had a very crazy idea (and still have it), and my sole goal at that time was to bring back life into a dead person  ;D

So keep thinkinga and analyzing, seems like u r utilizing ur summer vacation in a very positive way  :)

Dear srusti,

I didnot see ur replies so far... hope you are working on getting answers....

but just to give u some clues..... i will write down.... But, i dont know in which grade you are... but i assume u are in 4th or 5th (just a guess based on ur age); i make this point as to understand the answers u need to know a lot more which u will learn in high school or junior college.... but just a few passing comments....

Is there a way to find out how old is the earth?
---- yes! many methoids....one ofthe prominent is carbon dating... but to understand what it is u need to know about radioactivity in physics

Do birds see the Earth as a fire ball at night?? I remember that I once heard scientists know that birds at night see the earth as a fire ball. Is that true. If it was did the scientists change into a bird? Or Did they find a talking bird to explain it.
----- hahahha very funny!!! do u have to ask your dad/mom if they are mad at you? or can you make it out from their face?... of course the correct answer is brain mapping... again u need to know advanced neuroscience for this

When clocks were invented how did the people know that 2 'o' clock in the afternoon is really 2 o clock??
---- clocks are set based on some set defined standards, basically to get base constants, for that u need to learn atleast basic units and dimensions which u learn in junior college/bacheolors

How did monkeys change into humans??
--- no direct proof so far and debatable... but hypothsized based on some biologocal evidences like bone studies, anatomical and cheological evidences of excavations from ancient man. again you to learn a lot of human biology, evolution and zoology for this...

but just because these need advanced learning dont stop thinking... BUT VERY IMPORTANT.... dont waste your time in searching at the cost of your present studies.... as each grade builds a strong foundation for next... so you to have strong foundation in your present grade to better understand and analyze higher-up....

Hope this helps....

I'm pretty sure that there is a way to find out how to find out how old the Earth is. I heard that  the Earth is about 64 billion years old.

I dont know about the birds seeing the Earth as a fire ball, But I'm sure that Scientists change don't into birds and that they found a talking bird is like a 1 in 300 Centillion(1 followed by 303 0s,I'm not kidding!).

Uncle I don't know what is radioactivity and how to do carbon dating. But I'll  ask my parents to explain them in brief for time being. I cant wait until my higher studies. ;D I found so many articles in google.

Oh! Of course, that's why birds don't come out of their nests at night eccept owls and bats :D ;D ( I know bats are mammals infact the only flying mammals.)Because birds are scared of the fireball. But how do Scientists know that birds see the earth as fire ball in peticular?????

Anindu,

I learned that the earth is 64 billion years old too.But that's just an estimate that Scientists made( it said that in our Science text book.) And actulally you could estimate how old the earth is by dinosaures fossils, by cutting down some old looking and alive trees to it's base and you can see rings through out the the base you can count the rings to get an estimate of how old is earth.

I am not sure of the fire-ball concept. Never heard that. But is there a way to read someones brain... YES.
But accuracy as with any test or scientific methods is not 100%. but tries to reach some degree of reasonable accuaracy in brain mapping.

Also srusti, my honest advice, dont rush with these things. What i learnt in my academics in a rather hard way and I think is also the key in sciences is NOT how much/many rare details you know... But its about getting the basic concepts crystal clear. Basic concepts you get only when u go up sequentially (even if it amounts to be a bit slow.. thats ok). Because to understand radioactivity you have to know chemistry, physics, for that you have to know atoms and molecules etc., and that you get it in lower grades.

Also the thing to realize is, you can have time to go-up, but you can never (or very difficult) to go back. So its absolutely essential to have very good clear concept in your present studies.

So that means everything that we have learned in our Science text Book is not 100% accurate ??

So how can we get 100% accuracy?? Is there a way. Maybe we need a scientist who is a Mahatma :D. Then only everything would be 100% accurate.

as far as mahatmas are concerned... why do you think they are not scientists? I think Master is the perfect scientist I came across to-date (well not exactly came across... I mean from what i heard). SImilarly Isn't God/supreme the best doctor?

By the way srusti, from your posts and from my understanding you seem to be interested i science, so let me give you a question which i think you will love to know. How did the word doctor come? and why do doctor's prescription has Rx... what is the meaning and how did that come... try to find out or else i will tell u latter.

So that means everything that we have learned in our Science text Book is not 100% accurate ??

hahahaha..... very smart.... I wish you did not pick-it-up  8)

i was debating with myself when i wrote that sentence. The sentence i wrote is definitely true. but the best and simple answer i can give you is ... you learn something ... next you learn more to realize what you learnt before is not 100% accurate... you learn somemore and than to realize what you thought was the reason to prove worng before is not correct..so on andso forth... if you analyze this, unless you did the first step you could not have gone up.....so the bottomline is you have to be stringently accumulating knowledge for that... and that is the reason why I said learning every grade in your studies clearly is absolutely important..... i am making this because.. if someone says there is no need to learn as we are learning something not 100% accurate.. i would not agree with it... let me know what you think and do u agree?

Jai Sai Master!

Kids, great questions! and good answers from Swarup garu.

One thing I would suggest you kids. First, you guys think about how you would find out the age of the earth. Then read about how scientists did that. Then compare and contrast. That was what Master used to make us do.

So, you guys think first! And at 9 yrs of age, you are smart enough to crack some crazy problems, if only you give them a shot. Take time. Try and solve that puzzle yourself. Talk to others (like you are doing with swarupgaru), but dont blindly take what ever they say. You think about it too. Scientists keep exploring into these puzzles. Get used to that, and IM SURE, you can come up with answers! Besides, as we elders have lots of nonsense in our heads called 'life experience', we cant be as original as you guys in solving puzzles. So, i say, you got a great advantage there.

For example, regarding the age of the earth, it has been changed so many times, and is still debated by scientists themselves. New advances will keep giving new insights and clearer pictures to even the scientists. And they are gracious enough to change their estimates if experiments (or theories) prove so. So, it keeps changing.

Also, start thinking about things that are helpful to human kind. Not just about 'things', but also about one's self, one's thoughts and behaviour, why it is so, how it should be, what are the problems that people are facing, how can we solve them, etc. Think carefully, for example, why we get 'angry' and what are its bad effects. Why do we get angry?? What is the basic reason behind it? What kind of reasons are valid and what kind of reasons for anger are stupid? Can we justify our anger? How can we remove the weakness of getting angry?

Start thinking like that. Thats my suggession.

Very true.  It happens all the time!!

Think about this srusti. "Sun rizes in the east and sun sets it the west." is some thing we learn. Next we learn "Sun never rises nor sets, only earth rotates.. " Both are true, but one is fundamentally more true than the other. Thats the way we are taught.
And yes, its not hundred percent accurate at all. Almost nothing is. But that doesnt stop us from using that information to improve our lives!! So, learn it, but learn to question it so that we can get more and more fundamental truths!

This statement of yours is perfectly accurate. 100 percent!!

A lot of Scientific Terms come from Latin or Greek. The word Doctor came from the Latin word docere means " to Teach ".

Rx means giving for others "to take". That's why they put it on a prescription. The doctor gives the prescription for the person to take. This question is so easy Uncle. I  asked Amma this qusetion when I was in 3rd grade after my Doctor's visit.

Rx came from the Latin word "recipere" means "recipe".

You guessed right Uncle, I am interested in science, and It's my most favorite subject. It's the main subject to enter into my future profession. :)

And Uncle I'm going to 5th grade for this academic year.

Yes,I agree Uncle. If someone says that we don't need to learn because the information is not 100% accurate I would not agree.Like you said we should learn first for judging whether It's accurate or not. It need's some time and patience. Right ??

Mahatmas are scientists and God/Supreme is the best Doctor. But I think unlike mahatmas and Supreme, Scientists and Doctors have some limitations. Right Uncle ??

That's the Truth. Scientists depend on experiments to get some "knowledge" which is of limited use. No where close to the knowledge imparted by Mahatma. Mahatma's teachings have eternal value. They are Sastras or Scriptures.
