On Pride
« on: August 04, 2016, 01:15:20 PM »
Dear Members,
how to understand these statements? please clarify

"Pride can be of many types and all are equally potent obstacles to one’s spiritual progress. But the most difficult one to control or conceal, and yet the most elusive of its forms is pride in one’s own faith in and love for god or guru. And Baba was quick in noticing it in his devotee and ruthless in nipping it in the bud."
-Master

If you must have the feeling of I and mine, then associate it with God. Say, for instance, "My Rama, my Krishna." If you must have pride, then feel like Bibhishana, who said, "I have touched the feet of Rama with my head; I will not bow this head before anyone else."
-Sriramakrishna
Regards,
Srinivas

Jai Sai Master, Babu garu!
Jai Sai Master, Sai Bandhus!
Jai Sai Master, Srinivas garu!

We all believe in God and Sadguru to some extent. We do so based on our upbrining mostly and a little bit on our own experience of what we heard and have seen.

So, as per the above (very personalized) experience, we think that the God we believe is the greatest. That the Sadguru we believe is the greatest.

What Master garu in the book "Sai Baba The Master" is saying is that the above belief is incorrect to our spiritual upliftment. [1] It gives us pride that our GOD/GURU is great. That means we are "localizing" the great GOD/GURU. [2] By localizing, we are saying "Your GOD/GURU is not great". [3] This false pride pushes us to hate or make us jealous in many unknown situations. [4] This false pride also makes us do something towards our fellow spiritual bandhus (our Sai Bandhus) which is not good. [5] That in turn makes our fellow Sai bandhus hate us. And so the great cycle of hate and more hate toward each other!!

Many many more reasons. Which is why Master garu explained the dangers of "Spiritual Pride".

I will give you an example about an aquaintance, a distant friend, and I pray Baba to forgive me (for judging it like the way I do here) because that stuck in my head for a very long time. I tried not concentrating on this friend's spiritual pride...... for...... what do I know? I might have a similar spiritual pride. But it is a good example.

This so called friend believes in Dattatreya Swamy. Reads many spiritual books. Loves Sri Gajanan Maharaj and believes that Sri Gajanan Maharaj is the complete incarnation of Sri Datta Swamy. But he does not believe in Sri Sai Baba. He believes that Sri Sai Baba is Muslim (well, no surprise here. We are blinded by our self-taught knowledge). He also hates muslims.

This is one of the examples of Spiritual Pride. I told him that Sri Gajanan Maharam HIMSELF visited Shirdi to take darshan of Sri Sai and quoted "as is" from SAI BABA THE MASTER! He isn't convinced.

I guess, the number 1 danger of "Spiritual Pride" is that eventually, you will get kicked away from that great Saint that you love if you hate another great Saint!!

I cannot comment on the second one about SriRamaKrishna

Best Regards to all! Jai Sai Master!
Jai Sai Master!
Jai Swamy Sai!
