Ideas for a better humanity - The penguin ideas
« on: December 04, 2009, 10:57:35 PM »
Jai Sai Master!!

Humanity, like never before, is connected. Internet has turned the world into a global village. We here about it all the time. We experience it. However, many social institutions are still in the archaic ages, not quite catching up with the new found 'consciousness' of connectedness that the internet exudes. I am here to discuss such ideas that i have got, with full awareness that many people here and in future generations might consider, with all their better knowledge than mine, that seem to be a good way to go about facing and eradicating many problems of the society.

Idea 1 :  lets take medicine.

I am not a huge fan of allopathic medicine. I am more 'homeopathic'. That said, the world today is under great duress. Allopathy is the leading 'curer' of diseases, the major life saving mechanism of the world. As much as I love to see homeopathy coming to the fore-front, I would also accept betterment of the health-care system of this world. One problem with this, as with many other problems of this world, is that this system is still stuck in the archaic, cumbersome, ineffecient, and manifestly inhuman system of capitalism. Big companies have the resources, it seems, to find medicines. And they SELL medicines. And medicine, the cure, has become a 'commodity' which one has to 'buy'. many people are not receiving medication on account of lack of 'money'. Much suffering is being witnessed.

Looking at the open-source community for software, which is making wonderful strides in the direction of the cure to the disease of 'capitalism', why not apply similar ideas to atleast some aspects of health-care?

For example,
rather than companies finding medicines, and inhumanly 'patenting' them for the sole purposes of 'money-making', why not found an organization that runs on public funding (via donations and philanthrophy) which finds cures and releases formulae freely, like open-source software? May be another (or same organization) that creates medicines and distributes them, without the hazzle of capitalism? Why not make medicines and formulae freely available to the public so that any one can make medicines locally and sell on a cost to cost basis (or even freely)? Why not have contributors (like software engineers) work voluntarily in finding stable molecules as cures??

Idea 2 : The noble idea of 'providing adequate food to the world via GM foods'.

Why cannot such seeds be 'uncapitalized' if the idea is so noble??  As anti as I am to GM foods (i seriously doubt whether the need for it has arrived yet), I still respect others opinions in hope that they are better useful for human kind. Why not make them completely open sourced?? Why cannot the seeds be shared without signing obnoxious bonds?? Why cannot there be organizations that help farming of indigenous varieties if they are seen as 'benifitial'? Why cant home-farming be popularized and taught in schools??

Idea 3 : Industrial and product oriented open-source solutions.

Why cannot there be manuals for producing required items for better standards of living, which are open-source?? Why cannot great ideas be 'unpatented' voluntarily by the 'creators' if it is feasible??

Idea 4 : Open-source like education systems? (I see moves happening along these lines, with lectures being freely made available my many reputed universities)

Why cannot people volunteer to teach others, via internet or directly, the various subjects? Why cannot groups of such people (with quality checking involved) be created which readily produces and handles education requirements locally?? I see this as a great idea to break the sullen mould that public education seems to impose, almost monopolistically. For example, education on farming is not reaching farmers in India. Why cannot people just create free schools to organize and teach such knowledge locally?? Why should it be via 'state's grant'??

These, and more to come, are named 'the penguin ideas' as a tribute to the linux 'penguin' which is spurring such a brilliant revolution in the software and information technology sectors. May the discussion ensue and may more ideas come, and most of all, may someone take up the initiative towards making a better humanity.

May Master bless us all.

Jai Sai Master.

Babu garu,

Yes. In IT, open source is a huge success. It worked and it works great as we all access the open source tools almost every day. Never thought of this concept for Agriculture or Health industry.

I would like to share my thoughts from my experiences for the first idea may be by tomorrow or earlier.

Jai Sai Master !

Excellent !

What we also need to think is that a lot of people are coming forward with initiatives in thier own way and fortunately, they are finding funding.

For example Wikipedia is really great. I am talking from am amateur point of view. I hvae studied a particular subject but I have no idea aboot anything other that that. Wiki is really great in that regard. May be a bit of quality chekcs are required but all in all a great initiative.

I am no expert in any of the topics mentioned. But I still hope to contribute to this sort of discussion - a discussion where although we might not find words Baba or God in - but contain their essence.

Dwarakanath garu,

I have some ideas about home grown vegetables, which i'm doing since 7,8 years....But its not GM, very natural organic food free from pesticides naturally grown from compost, and vermi composting.

May be you are all aware of raised bed concept, and square foot gardening, and container gardening.....but the main disadvantage is i can grow them only during summer.

I'll share my ideas on this, which i've gained through my personnel experience with you all soon..

Jai Sai Master.

Concept of this thread is very interesting and noble. We try to share our thoughts how basic they may sound because we have an opportunity to keep learning from the discussion.

Before we come up with ideas, we would like to understand the concept first. We can do this only by explaining how much we understand so that we move ahead to get some creative ideas ultimately.

Quote
Idea 1 :  lets take medicine.

Babu garu has used two terms 1. Sharing formula and 2. Avoiding hazzles of capitalism. Solution taken now is through open source.

With a focus on open source, let's say we are involved in open source project of a software product and a healthcare product, what do we experience by ourselves.

We realize with software,

1. Concepts, Time and Human minds collaborate here. And a software source product can be developed by trail and error. And it can wait.

2. All the team members can share code over network without need for all staying together at a single location.

3. Less investment at the time of development.

4. Development can happen at any of the day so that most prefer to participate as the involvement is flexible and challenging.

Whereas for a Healthcare product,

1. More dependence on the research and development involving people and material rather than on just human minds.

2. R & D has to be done at specific locations in well equipped labs.

3. There is huge investment involved for the machinery, raw material, technical people since beginning and contributions are needed since day one.

Not trying to sound pessimistic but trying to understand how we can apply the success factor of software open source projects to healthcare.

It is true to say wealthy capitalists are exploiting this and making patents and enjoying the fruits of their research for centuries. This is true for both allopathic and herbal based products too.

But let's take a scenario, even if we make the formula open to all, there is a big question, can people utilize the availability of the formula properly? Say for an example, we know formula for an antibiotic which cures the deadliest disease and we make it public. How can we control the mis/overuse of the same by all? A software product is for everyone to use whereas an antibiotic is not for all to use. Within no time the virus or bacteria gets immune to the over/wrong use and makes it worse for the people. So we see danger of going away from the standards and principles. But the same may work well for the herbal based medicines because of no or less side effects. We dont have clear idea for herbal based products. Please share your thoughts.

Quote

Ideal sharing of medicines should be oriented towards maintaining the standards set by the Scientific community. That means open source projects still require complete funding. And assuming there is enough public fund, in our opinion, rather than releasing the formula freely, steps should be taken to work in collaboration by multiple generous teams to prepare a formula by efficient means so that the product becomes cheaper and makes it available to all at affordable prices. At this time, hardly any skilled technical persons may choose open source funded projects due to the insecure prevailing environment but may be with the time even open source projects may become successful and attracts skilled staff too.

Few more factors like

What happens to the competition and to the quality of the products?
Does public contribute for something that takes years?

We look forward to your ideas.

Lalitha garu, please share your ideas for the organic farming. Sounds interesting.

This is a great step Babu garu. Indeed, the internet can be used to change many things.

I am very eagerly waiting to see what kind of ideas we can come up with. I do have some ideas based on what I read and what I observed since the last ten years. But my ideas are more about the roadblocks that are put in front of an individual by a corporation or a government. The extent to which a corporation or a government goes to work on secrecy and the steps taken to nip an individual who comes out with a revolutionary idea that is a threat to government and seems to be good to a common man. So, my idea is more like how we can escape those road blocks and reach a common person successfully. Like Asterias garu said in another thread, we need "yukti" also to produce good to others, otherwise, we will be stopped every step of the way.

Please let me know whether my thinking is correct or whether I am deviating from the the topic.

Lalitha garu, Jai Sai Master! Even I am interested in how you are doing the home-grown farming. I will be particularly interested to know its sustainment in the northern part of USA (for that matter, any northern part is colder than other parts) where we need different kinds of technologies to produce the farming

Best regards to all,
Jai Master!

By far opensourcing education through internet is put in good practice as Asterias garu mentioned
regarding wikipedia and one such similar site is as below.

Jai Sai Master!

As I understand it, regarding medicine and other such industries, it can be done as follows.

An organization, with branches and wings where ever possible, funded by public philanthropy, with these huge labs on location and networked extensively for sharing of ideas and data. The products (unfortunate word to use for medicines.. :/) like formulae, compounds and methods and machines are shared and the medicines thus found and their formulae are given out on a 'free' or a 'very cheap' basis.

Distribution channels that are existing today are suffice for the moment, but as this catches on, they have to be revamped to work with the philanthropy mode. These organizations and the medicine manufacturing organizations are closely monitored by experts.

Service to the needy is done exactly like 'service'. People from the community, everyone, learns the basics of such service, basic medicine and health practices, etc. and people do it as a social/community service basis. Students, like in most countries where it is mandatory to serve in the army, it will be mandatory to learn and serve in such institutions. And medical knowledge is provided freely to anyone wanting to learn, via the internet and via such institutions.

What do you think?

Based on this I have got an idea.May be these are small ideas.

1.Mobile medical van :
Few doctors with the help of volunteers can go to the rural and slum areas to treat patients. With less establishment cost the purpose will be served.

2.Neighborhood emergency response team:
Few people from 2 or 3 neighborhoods can form an emergency helping team.

Jai Sai Master!

Good ideas priyagaru. And they are already being implimented widely. However, looking at it deeply, "Cure" is being provided in your idea, but can 'health' be provided that way? Well, gyms, etc. can be set up, may be a dietitian can be employed in a van, but still looking at it more deeply, how much info is there really about 'health'?

there is a lot of knowledge about physiology out there in the medical colleges but not much about life. A lot about psychology, but not about the psyche or mind. A lot about vitamins and minerals, but lot less about foods. And medicines and cures are there, but many are 'kalti' (adulterated) and many are costly, and almost all of them are harmful. So, by providing them, what are we doing? Are we helping? Are we serving?

Surely we are serving the needy in the short-term, but no improvements in the long term, right?

How to go about it?

Jai Sai Master!
Recently came across the service done by Master EK's group. Training people in homeopathy, schools managed by parents and their children also studying in the same schools (Janakulam) etc. I don't know the whole thing, but heard about these in the experiences with Master EK videos on google and yahoo. I am yet to read books by Master EK garu and listen to his speeches. Hopefully I will get them next time when I go to India.

Babu garu, you can probably throw more light on Master EK's teachings and how he guided lot of people in to leading better way of life by serving others and making their whole life useful to society.
